Commissioning economic strategy to help Australia, India grow together: Malcolm Turnbull

Back

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], Apr. 12 (ANI): Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said that his government is commissioning an economic strategy that would look beyond the immediate horizon and help New Delhi and Canberra to grow together.

Turnbull further said that the strategy would help both the countries to grow together with a map that will guide their partnership through 2035.

“It is not about Australia discovering India but cementing India as a priority economic partner. It will explore how to strengthen the existing economic collaborations while identifying new ways to do business together. It will recommend new ways to maximize mutual benefits,” Turnbull said while addressing business leaders here.

The Australian Prime Minister further said that he and his Indian counterpart are determined that India and Australia should work more closely together across all elements of their strategic partnership –business, trade, investment, research and innovation, security and defence cooperation.

“The foundations for this enhanced relationship are strong and they are underpinned by shared history and shared values. We have a great deal in common,” he said.

Turnbull was also keen on helping India in many sectors such as hydroelectricity, renewable energy, food security, agriculture etc.

Turnbull also had discussion with Minister of State with Independent Charge for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal on the latest from the energy sector in India.

Turnbull also appreciated Prime Minister Modi’s charisma by informing how his tweets on trains, buses get likes in hundreds contrary to the one with the Indian Prime Minister in metro crossing the mark of 5,000 retweets.

Meanwhile, India and Australia yesterday signed six MoUs in different fields including combating terrorism, civil aviation security, sports, health and medicine and satellite navigation.

The MoUs were signed after the delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Turnbull.

The visiting dignitary was accorded a ceremonial reception at the forecourts of Rashtrapati Bhavan. He also visited the Rajghat to pay floral tribute to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

The two Prime Ministers also inaugurated the Nano-Techhnology Centre at Gurugram through video conference.

Turnbull arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for a four-day visit. This is his first visit to India. (ANI)
